What Is Open Enrollment?

Open Enrollment is the time when you can choose a new health insurance plan or make changes to your existing one. Whether you’re looking for coverage through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace or your state’s marketplace, this is your opportunity to find a plan that suits your needs.

Full-Year Coverage

Enrolling by midnight on December 15 (5 a.m. EST on December 16) ensures full-year coverage starting January 1, 2024. But wait, there’s more! In 2024, January 15 is a federal holiday, so you’ll have until midnight on Tuesday, January 16 (5 a.m. EST on January 17) to enroll. If you sign up after December 15 but before the January deadline, your coverage will begin on February 1, 2024.

Lower Costs and Assistance

Thanks to the American Rescue Plan (ARP) and the Inflation Reduction Act, financial assistance is available to eligible consumers. Four out of five HealthCare.gov customers can find health care coverage for $10 or less per month after subsidies. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have invested in grant funding to Navigator organizations, ensuring increased and enhanced enrollment assistance. These Navigators help consumers find the right health coverage, complete their Marketplace applications, and enroll in coverage, especially in underserved communities.

Simplifying Plan Selection

Choosing a health plan can be overwhelming, especially with the multitude of options. To ease the process, issuers offering plans through the Marketplace will be limited to offering four non-standardized plan options per product network type, metal level, inclusion of dental and/or vision benefit coverage, and service area in 2024. This reduction in plan choices aims to help consumers make informed decisions without feeling overloaded.
